Purulent Jacuzzi – Stench of the Drowned Carrion

Trying to find a good goregrind band is like trying to find a brick of gold in an ocean of shit. For every great band like Last Days of Humanity, you have to reach them by slogging through ten bands who believe that a pitch-shifter, a drum machine, and two chords tuned in drop-D are all you need to be brutal. With a name like Purulent Jacuzzi, I certainly wasn't getting my hopes up. Strangely enough, I really like this album.

Let me get the negatives out of the way. First of all, this album is not reinventing the wheel; they're simply replicating what has already been done by their goregrind forefathers, although they replicate it extraordinarily well. Secondly, the snare sounds hollow (I really don't want to say he's banging on a tin can) and is way too high in the mix. Third, although this sounds more like a personal thing, the squeals really annoy me. They also use movie samples from time to time. Luckily, they use them far less often than other goregrind bands.

Aside from all of that, this album is pretty good. The production was well-handled, so all the instruments can be heard rather clearly. The riffs are thoughtful and catchy and they also perform some noodling at times to keep things interesting. The drums are also intricately played, if you can get past the snare. I may not like the squeals, but I sure like the low Brodequin-inspired gurgles that accompany them.

On this album, 29 tracks rage by in only 25 minutes. It's long enough to fill you up and it's not so long that it gets boring.
