Blaspherit's “Fallen Oath of Black Doom” is one of albums that's so bad, it ends up becoming good. A lot of people will think this album is just plain bad, but I shall explain why this album is actually a very clever satire.
I knew this album was a satire just by looking at the cover. Two Christian saints with corpse paint. It's silly enough to tell the wise it's a parody, but it's subtle enough to fool any hapless kvlt kiddie.
The production is a perfect emulation of all those shitty black metal demos that keep sprouting up like weeds all over the underground. The bass is ridiculously high in the mix, which drowns out the other instruments. The guitars have a really thin tone to them and have a tendency to noodle randomly. The drums can hardly be heard underneath all the bass. The vocals mainly consists of pitch-shifted growls, more befitting a goregrind album. I guess he was trying to sound like Satan. But there are times when he lets out these strange high-pitched screams. Best of all, the band's performance is unbelievably sloppy. It's like they never bothered to rehearse. “Rehearsals? Fuck that shit! We're here to worship Satan and play black metal!”
Normally, I would declare this album as unbearable, irredeemable shit, but for some reason, it's so bad, it goes all the way down to hell and back and ends up being good. Just like Yor: Hunter from the Future or Reimu fights the bad guys of adrkness, there's a charming quality to the badness. Whether it be the ill-fitting vocals or the haphazard guitar work or that time when they break out a recorder at the end of “Weltering in Semen and Blood”, there's always something there that will make you laugh. As I said before, I have a feeling this album maybe intentionally bad, as if they're mocking all the kids with a guitar and a drum machine who think they're so grim and evil. If Blaspherit is trolling, I say “Well played, sir.”
