Discography Slog: Carcaroht

It's been some time since I've done one of these. This is mainly due to the fact that I'm really lazy, but this is one of those rare occasions where I'm not lazy, so I decided to seize the opportunity and write about an obscure Swedish death metal band named Carcaroht.

They formed way back in 1993, released three demo tapes, then split up. Other than that, I know nothing about them. Also, their name sounds like Kakarot. (Darn you, kakka carrot cake! You am no real super sand!)

First up is Dragons Dawn. Since this is a demo, the production's pretty muddy, but if you listen close enough, you'll find that it's filled with great shit. First of all, the riffs are killer. Since they're from Sweden, this is to be expected, but Carcaroht plays some especially killer riffs. The solos are even crazier. They sound like a dragon tearing ass through the skies. The drums are the simple blast and fill formula, but I'm okay with this because they're well-played. The growls aren't the best, but the other elements help you ignore this problem well.

Next there's Floating Souls. I won't review Promo 94 since it's just Floating Souls with a slightly different tracklist. The production is significantly improved; it's no longer muffled. The growls are also much better. They're much deeper and have more energy. The drums blast and fill without a hitch. No complaints there. The guitars are more adventurous and pull off more tricks with slower riffs and a bit more melody. As was the case on the last demo, the solos are fantastic. Hell, they just might be better than they were on the last demo.

Carcaroht is criminally underrated. If you find any of their demos around, be sure to pick them up. If someone else has them, kill him and take his demos.
