Petrychor – Dryad

Back in the spring of 2010, I was derping around Metal Storm when a man sent me a PM. I no longer have it with me, but it basically said that since I liked Njiqahdda, I should check out this band called Petrychor. The link then sent me to his bandcamp page. This was also the first time I ever visited bandcamp. So I downloaded the album and I was pleased with what I heard.

The most amazing part of this album would have to be the production. Like all other one-man black metal projects, Petrychor is restrained by its limited budget, but like any great thinker who is forced to improvise, the band takes these limited resources to create an absolutely colossal wall of sound. It's as if all the energies of earth have been concentrated to a single point and unleashed upon your ears, utterly enveloping you in a mighty maelstrom of sound. Rarely have I ever seen a metal album accomplish this feeling so masterfully.

Since this is a one-man project, the drums are programmed, but they blended in with the music so well I didn't notice they were programmed until much later. Due to the powerful and thick atmosphere, the guitars can be hard to hear at first, but they are amazing. They are infused with a great deal of melody and the riffs swirl around and enthrall you like the mighty spirits of the old forests. There are also plenty of solos that add to the frenetic, energetic atmosphere. The croaks and rasps are also hidden within the production, but this serves to enhance them, as it makes them sound like the proclamations of a long-forgotten nature god.

After I listened to this album, I was instantly hooked, and so will you.
