Fatal Epitaph was one of Ukraine's first death metal bands. They formed in 1988, shortly before the fall of the Soviet Union. They released three demos before releasing their first, last, and only full-length, Misanthropy, in 1997.
Let me get the most obvious problem out of the way first: the production is horrible. Everything sounds so quiet and muffled. It's not as bad as it is on Terminal Death's Faces of Death, but it's still bad.
The vocals aren't a growl but are more of a throaty yell. I didn't like it at first, but it eventually grew on me. It sort of reminded me of Korrozia Metalla. Though the production maybe bad, you can still hear the bass at times, and it's played quite well. The drums are handled nicely, blasting through the fog, throwing down some fills in its wake.
The best element would have to be the guitars. The chords are quite infectious and inventive, and the tremolo riffs have elements from both thrash metal and black metal. On top of all of that, the solos are infused with a great deal of melody. The best guitar work can be found on the song “Dance with Fire”.
You cannot imagine how hard it was for me to find this album. Though it has its flaws, it's still an enjoyable experience.
