Kalendae – Kalendae

Kalendae's debut demo, simply called Kalendae, gives us a great deal to take in. The production is a thick, impenetrable shell reminiscent of drone metal, the distortion is an entity that glides and swirls all around the room and encases you in a searing glow. There are only two songs, but the demo lasts 26 minutes. By the end of it, the drone-like production, the beastly distortion, and the long riff passages will leave you exhausted.

Listen long enough and you will peel back the layers and find the wonders inside. The riffs are dissonant and sometimes droning yet melodic. Their beauty merely hides behind the ugly cloud. Some of the riffs remind me of Celephais. The drums specialize in your standard black metal blast beats and really slow drone rhythms. No complaints there. The vocals consist of distant, reverb-drenched rasps, very similar to what most ambient black metal bands use. Once again, I have no complaints about them, and they help to enhance the colossal, otherworldly atmosphere.

This demo was quite the surprise. This is more of an artistic piece than an actual album and it's rather hard to get into. It requires a great deal of mental chewing, but I still enjoyed it. Recommended for those who love atmospheric black metal.
