Whore of Bethlehem is another in a long line of brutal death metal bands from Texas and it's kind of a supergroup, as it's composed of members from Scattered Remains and Disfigured. The group formed back in 2009 and the men rehearsed for three years before releasing their first demo this year. Can they break the stereotype of supergroups always sucking? Let's find out!
Since this is their first release, I'll forgive the unpolished and unbalanced production. How best to explain Whore of Bethlehem's music? Well, imagine if Behemoth played brutal death metal. That's what Whore of Bethlehem sounds like. The guitars have a bit of a black metal tinge to them which creates a dissonant, chaotic feel. The drummer must be a clone of Inferno, as they sound almost exactly alike, from the rapid drilling double bass to the raging hyperblasts. The vocals alternate between a sickened rasp and a deep growl. They're both well-performed, but with this kind of music, I just wish there were less rasps and more growls.
The Crowning Moment maybe unpolished, but the musicianship is fantastic. I especially loved the guitar solo at the end of “The Necessity of Premature Obsolescence”. It sort of reminds me of Steve Tucker era Morbid Angel.
