Aylwin is the latest member of the Atlatl Music Group, and they play Cascadian black metal, although I have no idea where in Cascadia they are. You know what I like? Metal album covers that consist of a picture of a mountain, like what Alda did. I still need to listen to Alda, but not now, because we're listening to Aylwin.
Only one song on this demo is metal, but the two other songs are pretty nice. The first song consists of a flute accompanied by the sounds of the wilderness. For some strange reason, it all reminds of the intro to the Temnozor song “Folkstorm of the Azure Nights”. The last song consist of an acoustic guitar playing next to a gentle campfire. It's a stark change of pace from the second song, but it reflects the beauty and grace of Cascadia.
The second song is the only metal song, but it's still fantastic. The foundation is still recognizably Cascadian, but they exhibit a strong Austere influence. The guitars have a rather morose sound to them as well as cloudy distortion to reinforce this morose feeling. The first third of the song is a somber mid-paced affair, the second third has a much faster pace, and the last third returns to the mid-paced rhythms with a more upbeat feel, and the drums play them all excellently. The agonized yells are rather high in the mix and are extremely distorted, but this helps enhance the overall feel of the album.
Aylwin is a fantastic addition to Atlatl's roster, and I'm eager to hear their future releases. If you love Cascadian black metal, then do yourself a favor and get this demo.
