Morbid Corpses was a death/thrash band from Kenosha, Wisconsin of all places. They formed in 1987, released one three-song demo in 1991, and broke up sometime thereafter. They also released this two-song promo called Rise, but I can't find it anywhere.
Since this is a demo, the production is pretty muddy. The double bass sounds like a soft, yet rapid, thumping. Luckily, the production is better than on most demos I've listened to, as I can hear most of the instruments quite clearly. In terms of music, they sound a lot like early Cannibal Corpse with a bit of thrash metal thrown in. I can hardly hear the bass, but there are certain occasions where it pops up, and as far as I can tell, it's played rather well, though it mainly just follows the guitars.
The drums are rampaging and vigorous. The blast beats are more of the thrash metal variety, but it's still rampages just as hard as its death metal counterparts. I just wish the double bass didn't sound like thumping. The vocals aren't all that great, though. It sounds as though he couldn't perform proper growls, so he had to use a pitch-shifter. To me, this just sounds unnatural in death metal. Luckily, the guitars make up for it. The riffs, as you can probably expect, are a cross between thrash metal and death metal. The solos consists of squeals and noodling that was typical of the time (and which I love). There's even this part at the beginning of “Afterworld” where they play these ominous clean guitars, another common trait of the time.
Though I didn't like the vocals and I wish the double bass didn't sound like soft thumping, Demonstrations of Devastation is still a great early death metal demo. If you're lucky enough to find this, pick it up.
