Necromass – Mysteria Mystica Zofiriana

The only reason I picked up this album is because of the giant pair of balls on the cover. Other than that, I know nothing about Necromass and I've never listened to them before, so this will be a new experience for me.

First off, the intro is too long. I know they're trying to build atmosphere, but if it drags on for too long, the listener is just going to get bored. The production is really uneven. The drums and vocals are really high in the mix and I can hardly hear the guitars. This is made worse by the fact that the vocalist never shuts up. He implements a rather weak high-pitched rasp and scream. He sounds like !T.O.O.H.!'s less talented little brother. Normally I wouldn't be bothered by something like this, but when his lackluster performance is combined with the fact that he never shuts up, he gets annoying real fast. This is made even worse when you add in the fact that the vocals are the highest thing in the mix.

The drums are okay. They can blast just fine, although the double bass sounds too much like a typewriter. The beats and fills are pretty good, but they're nothing to write home about. The only part of this album I liked was the guitar. They play your typical mid-90s black metal riffs, but they also play some riffs that have a touch of melody to them, thus giving the songs a bit of catchiness. At times, they'll play some acoustic guitars over the rest of the music that add a rather unique touch to the presentation. Overall, the guitars are the best part of the album. Unfortunately, they're drowned out by the vocals, the worst part of the album.

I should have known better than to be distracted by that giant pair of balls on the cover. The guitars were great, but they were ruined by the annoying vocals.
