Australia is well-known for being home to some great black metal bands. Will Ancient Dawn continue that tradition? Let's find out!
Let's just get the most glaring problem out of the way first: the snare is too loud. This problem becomes especially annoying during the blasts, as it descends into this “pong pong pong” sound. The drummer's skills are quite fine, especially with the double bass and cymbal work. I just wish the snare wasn't so loud.
The guitars are pretty decent. They play your standard Norwegian-style riffs with lots of tremolo picking that have a dash of melody, which is most prevalent during the mid-paced sections. (Listen to “The Forest Labyrinth” to see what I mean.) The croaks are okay, still sticking with the Norwegian tradition. Nothing too interesting, but they fit with the music quite nicely. However, he also performs these screams which give me the impression that he shouldn't really be doing screams. He should really just stick to croaks.
This is a pretty decent album, save for the snare. I won't dismiss them just yet. It would be a mistake to do so. I dismissed Nontinuum after listening to their first demo, but they later proved me wrong with their full-length debut.
