I don't know much about Phalarys. All I know is that they are a blackened death/thrash band from Peru and they released their first demo near the end of 2012.
First of all, this is pretty well-produced for a demo. Nothing is muffled and you can hear all the instruments quite nicely. Their musical skills are also fantastic. As I said before, they combine thrash metal instrumentation with early death metal growls and a touch of black metal on the guitar tone. The drums mainly play simple blast beats with some fills thrown in on occasion, but with music like this, that's all you need.
The bass is quite prominent and clacks along in the background. The vocals consist of a raspy bark and scream, demonstrating influences from both early death metal and early black metal. Of course, the best part of this album is easily the guitar. As is the case with other bands that exhibit a thrash metal influence, they focus less on violating your ear drums and more on crafting killer riffs. The lead guitar constantly howls and shrieks and shreds with blasphemous delight with some tasty heavy rhythms thrown in between.
This demo was a huge surprise for me. Phalarys takes black metal, death metal, and thrash metal, and they combine it in a way that is both heavy and fun. I hope to hear more from them soon.
