I don't know much about Stranglion Rot. All I know is that they are a Finnish death metal band who just released their first album, Rotten Heart of Evil, near the end of 2012.
First of all, I must admire their old school worship. The music alternates between fast Swedish-style blasts and mid-paced dark groove sections with a bit of grindcore thrown in for good measure. The guitars play some furious riffs and their tone is crunchy and the bass is thick and provides a great deal of meat to the presentation. I can find no complaints about the drums, as they do their job dispensing hard-hitting blasts and massive mid-paced beats. The vocals sound more akin to early grindcore than death metal, as they sound more like a low grunt than a growl, but they match the aggressive feel of the rest of the music.
However, I do have one problem with this album: the songwriting is repetitive, which is odd considering how short the album is. You're having fun during the first few tracks, but by the halfway point you realize, “Wait, I've listened to all of this before.” I wish there was a greater variety in the music, like what I heard on the last song. Other than that, this is a pretty good debut. If they just diversify their songwriting then they'll be great.
