There's lots of good stuff coming out of England lately. First there was Acrania, then there was Rise Of An Empire, and now we have Cognizance.
This EP is unrelenting tech-death fury. Their biggest influence seems to be Necrophagist, which is made obvious by the vocal style. He uses those deep, gruff vocals that sound almost exactly like Necrophagist. The drums also sound almost exactly like Necrophagist. They unleash a torrent of pulverizing blast beats and complex fills and displays an absurd level of endurance when playing those rapid double bass sections.
As with Necrophagist, the guitars are the star of the show. Each song is filled with a plethora of complex riffs that have an overwhelming tone to them. Of course, these songs aren't complete without solos, and Cognizance definitely delivers on that front. These solos have a profound sense of melody and display astounding power, as well as a deep sense of emotion, as can be seen on “Defying a Natural Process”. For some strange reason, that solo reminds me of Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Assault 2.
This is fantastic Necrophagist worship. The cover of this EP can be quite deceitful. The renaissance art piece implies old school death metal and the logo implies death/thrash, yet these guys play technical death metal that is both intense and soulful.
