Brutally Butchered – Brutally Butchered

I can't find these guys on Metal Archives, but from what I've been able to gather, they're a brutal death metal band from Los Angeles and this self-titled EP is their latest release.

One thing I really appreciate about this EP is the prominent bass. It plods along and gives the music a great deal of depth. One of the keys to making a great slam album is to have a prominent bass, and these guys nail that aspect perfectly. I especially love its performance at the halfway point of “Excruciation”. The drums do their job well, rapidly switching between pounding rhythms and rapid blast beats. The snare sounds kind of tinny and is high in the mix, but it's nothing too annoying. The growls, though not original, work just fine with the rest of the music. It's basically those Devourment-worship gutturals we know and love. The guitars are also well-played, and their structure and groove harken back to the early days of Cannibal Corpse.

What I don't like is their frequent use of audio clips. It's not as bad as Mortician, but it's still quite annoying. They're nothing more than unnecessary padding. In fact, the first song is nothing but an audio clip. Brutal death metal bands need to stop using audio clips and just focus on making good music. Luckily for me, Brutally Butchered still make great brutal death metal. I especially love their bass work. If you're interested in listening to them, you can download this EP for free from their official Bandcamp page.
