It seems that Italy has been at the forefront when it comes to brutal death metal lately. The two biggest figures in that scene are Hour of Penance and Fleshgod Apocalypse. The latest contender in this scene is Unbirth, who released their full-length debut, Deracinated Celestial Oligarchy, just this year. Will they hold up against Italy's big names in brutality? Let's find out.
Unbirth doesn't go for anything flashy. They cut through the fluff and bring us pure brutality. The drums let loose a relentless torrent of blast beats complemented by triggered double bass and intricate fills. The vocals of a deep, hoarse growl similar to that of Dallas Toler-Wade. Not all that original, but they still do their job well, and that's the only thing that matters. They also perform some inhaled growls so as to throw in a bit of variety.
As with most other brutal death metal bands from Italy, the strongest point is the guitars. They play a lot of thick and crunchy riffs similar to old Suffocation, but on occasion they will play some middle eastern sounding riffs similar to Nile. The riffs can also get a bit melodic at times, like on “Crowding at the Edge of Cosmos”. They also make sure to include some sweet solos, such as on “Incestuous Warpath” and “In Absence Of Form”.
Unbirth further prove that Italy is a hotbed of brutal death metal along with Russia, Turkey, and Indonesia. I love the pulsating force of the drums and the excellent guitar work. Also, I love the cover art.
