Indonesia has recently seen a huge rise in the number of brutal death metal bands that have formed in recent years. I believe this mostly has to do with recording equipment becoming cheaper and easier to obtain, and thanks to ReverbNation, their music is much easier to distribute to a wider audience. Hateful Disease is one such band that has popped up out of nowhere in recent months. Though they formed back in 2005, they weren't able to release anything until this year. Again, this has to do with recording equipment becoming cheaper and easier to obtain. But are they any good? After all, lots of subpar bands have popped up as well. Only one way to find out.
The first thing I'd like to compliment is the production. Whereas most other bands I've listened to have had muffled production, the music on this EP comes through nice and clear. As for the music itself, it takes some getting used to, but if you give it some time, then you'll find it's pretty good. Personally, I blame how they started off the EP with some standard chugging and pinch harmonics instead of putting their best foot forward.
Like most of their countrymen, the drums churn out a great deal of blast beats and double bass. What makes these guys special is the special attention they give to cymbal crashes that, on occasion, add an element of discord to the music. The drums even put on occasional displays of technical wankery that really spice up the music. The vocals consist of a growl that is deep yet hoarse, sounding similar to Siksakubur, and like Siksakubur, they also like to use gang vocals. Siksakubur is extremely influential in the Indonesian brutal death metal scene, and it shows here. As for the guitars, they sometimes do plenty of chugging, but they also do lots of fast and rather infectious riffs, especially on songs like “Brain Washer”. Some of the riffs and their tone even remind me of Nile.
This EP might not sound all that great in the beginning, but if you give it a chance, you'll find some pretty sweet brutal death metal. If they hone their craft some more, they might put out something really great in the future.
