As you're well aware, I'm a huge fan of Aylwin. They're a raw atmospheric black metal band from Southern California that has been around since the winter of 2012. They first caught my attention with their first demo, Soil and Cold, and I've been a fan of theirs ever since. I especially love the recent split they did with Stellar Descent. I recently scored the opportunity to conduct an interview with band member Eddiegerman Bowen. (Issaiah Vaca was busy that day.) Enjoy!
How did the band get started?
A: We worked together on previous projects and decided to produce something that was true to both of us.
What does the name Aylwin mean?
A: Aylwin is a mythological term for a forest rooted elf, or a friendly elf.
Were you involved in any projects before Aylwin? If so, could you tell us about them?
A: Issaiah, also known as Tuu Laricon, is involved with other musicians from Mexico with the projects Upacara and Hellkvlt Mexica.
I, Justin, am currently involved with Barking Backwards from California.
What bands are your main influences?
A: Bands like Wolves In The Throne Room, and our friends in Stellar Descent and Alda. Atmospheric spirituality, neo folk, and the current wave of U.S black metal also has a large influence on our sound.
I understand that you're from California. Does your place of residence influence your music in any way?
A: Various parts of California offer us the beauty and desolation that drives the creative force of Aylwin.
Could you tell us a little bit about your songwriting process?
A: It's a very tedious, sensitive, and private matter that we choose to keep between ourselves. Not even Our live musicians are involved in this process.
How did you meet up with the guy from Stellar Descent?
A: Mutual friends and the love of the genre we share. Anthony (Stellar Descent) is a very talented and humble individual to work with, which made our involvement with one another very enjoyable and fluid.
Could you tell us the significance of the song title “My Spirit of Pine and the Outer Body Experience: A Sequence of Night and Day”?
A: The song is our own manifestation of what it means to truly become entwined with the elements of night and day through nature and the human condition.
Who was that woman who performed clean vocals on that song?
A: Her name is Alexa Nunez, an acquaintance of Issaiah.
Thanks to Bandcamp, bands no longer need to pass through a record label in order to distribute their music to the masses. How do you feel about the site?
A: It helps. We don't feel anyone's musical experience should be limited based on a record labels desire for income or company gratification.
Got any future plans? I understand you're about to release a split album with CernĂ¡.
A: After the split we plan to continue on our path and strengthen our live experience.
Any final words for the fans?
A: Above all, thank you. We truly appreciate their interest in our project that means so much to us. Keep it DIY, and thank you BreadGod for all the positive and kind word you've given us.
