Viieden – Calamities Inflicted

These guys weren't available on Metal Archives, which meant I had to do actual research. First of all, their name isn't pronounced “Vee-eye-den” as I had once thought. Instead, it's pronounced “Seventh Eden”. Second, they're a brutal death metal band from Syria. I'm sure you're well-aware of all the strife that's raging across that country. It's a very hostile place for metal, so I admire how they're brave enough to make music like this in such an area. They've made only a two-song EP so far, but let me tell you it's some amazing shit.

Since the drums are the most prominent element in the production, I'll talk about them first. The blast beats are absolutely furious. The snare sounds like gunfire, and the intensity and structure of the drumming sounds quite similar to Inferno from Behemoth. Normally, I don't like it when the snare is so high in the mix, but it fits quite well here as it makes the music even more brutal. The guitars are also quite stellar. The riffs sound like a mixture of Behemoth and Nile. They sound quite ferocious but they're also thoughtfully crafted. I especially like the melodic leads on “Impalement Upon Creation”. It adds an element of beauty to the unholy destruction present throughout the album.

The only part I didn't like were the vocals. The growls were low but also quite hoarse. Personally, I don't think they exuded enough strength. I wish they would have been much deeper. Other than that, this was an amazing demo. I love the mixture of Behemoth and Nile in the guitars and I love the absolute fury put on display by the drums. I hope these guys stay safe and continue to make more awesome metal.
