Bandcamp Roundup Vol. 40

Gods in Graves

Gods in Graves have been around since 2007, but they didn't release their first full-length until this year. They play progressive blackened doom/death and they are totally awesome. The drums offer up plenty of hard-hitting blast beats, the growls are gruff and commanding, the riffs have a lot of groove to them, and the solos are powerful and atmospheric. Total awesomeness all around.

Morthylla

Now we move on to some cloudy, lo-fi black metal, courtesy of Morthylla. The drums provide minimalistic rhythms and blast beats and the vocals consist of a reverb-drenched howl that sounds very similar to Xasthur, but what I liked the most were the guitars. Their rapid tremolo riffs had an air of melody to them that made the music all the more enjoyable.

Gravestone

And now we close things out with some Swedish death metal courtesy of Gravestone. These guys sound like they were pulled straight from the early 90s. The drums play lots of simple blast beats, the growls and shouts are hoarse and angry, the guitars have really gritty distortion and they play lots of crunchy riffs. They only have two songs up right now but they're awesome. I especially love those melodic riffs at the beginning of "Rotten Kill".
