Lou Cyfer – Worship Flesh

Lou Cyfer (I keep misreading it as Lou Cipher) is an obvious pun of Lucifer. It's also the name of an early Brazilian death metal band that formed back in 1989. They produced two demos and an EP before releasing their first and only full-length, Worship Flesh, in 1993. They broke up a year later. Let's hope this is better than most of the shit I've been listening to.

Luckily for me, this is better than most of the shit I've been listening to. After a short guitar intro that reminds me of Testament, we're sent down an infernal chasm of raw, primitive death/thrash. The drums are kind of hard to hear due to the cloudy production, but their performance still shines through, filling the air with constant blast beats and raucous cymbal crashes. I swear, those Brazilians are experts at the rapid machine gun blast beats. Despite the raw production, the bass can be heard quite well, as it plods along and makes the music feel more full and alive.

The growls are low and hoarse. If the demon on the cover had a voice, this is probably what he'd sounds like. There are also these times when they perform these screams that sound like the tormented cries of the damned. Since this is an old school death metal album, the best elements is the guitars. The riffs are fast, simple and totally infectious, blazing their way through every song like a pack of runaway demons. I especially love the solos. Those fiery fingers wreak utter havoc on the fretboard. The guitars do not compromise. They just destroy.

This album might be really short (ten songs blaze by in only twenty one minutes), but it's packed full of awesome old school death metal. I especially love those simple yet infectious riffs and those blazing solos. In short, Worship Flesh is a charming and energetic experience that is sure to please any fan of the old and obscure.
