Mold – Cremated Alive

Mold. It's not a creative name, is it? It reminds me of the mold you find on loaves of bread. Sometimes, I would purchase bread on clearance, and just a day later, it would have mold growing on it. It's total bullshit. So what kind of Mold are we talking about today? Well, it's a death metal band from Denmark, and contrary to their name, their music is quite interesting.

The production is deliciously raw. It reminds me of the production on the legendary Carcass album Reek of Putrefaction. It's grotesquely distorted and the bass is thicker than a vat full of fermented innards. The music's pretty sweet as well. The rapid double bass sounds like a churning storm, and they compliment their blast beats with plenty of fills. The growls are low and bellowing. He sounds like a total ghoul, and I love it.

The riffs are as crunchy as a bag of Doritos. They're rather simple in nature, but the distortion creates this aural miasma that makes them sound dark and diabolical. I hear a lot of influences in these riffs ranging from the Florida scene to the Swedish scene. I even hear a bit of Carcass in there. They also top off these crunchy riffs with some wicked solos that sound like the mad cackling of poltergeists.

What an awesome piece of old school worship. I love the crunchy distortion and I love the simple and infectious riffs. If you're a huge fan of the old school, then be sure to listen to this album. I guarantee you'll love it.
