Profecia – Blind Existence

Profecia is a surprisingly common name for a metal band. This Profecia in particular is a death/thrash band from Mexico. They formed in 1992, released only one demo called Blind Existence one year later, and broke up soon thereafter. Let's see how it holds up.

The production is kind of muffled but pretty decent overall. Unlike most other death metal demos I've listened to, it doesn't sound like the music is trying to escape from Satan's asshole. I especially love how prominent the bass is. It rapidly clacks alongside the guitars and helps give an extra level of depth to the music. That's always a plus in my book.

As for the music proper, it essentially sounds like really harsh thrash metal. The blast beats are simple, hard-hitting, and lightning fast. The double bass is just as fast. These blast beats and double bass are great, but what really amazed me were his displays of technical wankery. The best example of this can be found near the end of the song “City of Lost Souls”. That wicked performance would make Dave Lombardo proud.

The vocals consist of a rasped shout that sounds quite similar to Kreator. They might be muffled, but his performance is angry and energetic. The guitars are easily the best part of this performance. They're highly influenced by the Bay Area but sound much harsher. Galloping, headbanging riffs such as those on “Arising Prophet” are common, as are fast shredding assaults which can best be seen on “Secret Union”. They're written and played very well, and each riff and transition makes sense. They also make sure to throw in plenty of tasty solos that exude lots of melody. Some of them even have a middle eastern sound to them. My personal favorite solo is on “City of Lost Souls”. It can best be described as “majestic”. I'm serious.

Although this demo isn't the best thing in the world, it still manages to offer up some great death/thrash that is well-written and well-played. It's a shame they never made anything else. They had some really good ideas and played some really good solos.
