Antinomian is a new black metal band from England that formed last year and released their debut album, Nihilum Infandum, early this year. Both band members used to be part of Subvertio Deus, which I heard was pretty good, so let's hope this offering is good as well.
First of all, I admire the drumming skills of Aheheste. Though they are shrouded in mist, their pounding fury still manages to shine through. They frequently switch from simple, aggressive blast beats to double bass that seems to roil like a thunderstorm. The cymbals crash with utter calamity and the snare drum feels like a lightning strike. His performance is absolute mayhem and gives this album an especially destructive nature.
Frontman Abdias performs bass and vocal duties. In regards to the bass, it's extremely thick and adds to the cloudy and mysterious atmosphere of this album. There are even times when they stand on their own and clack away with malicious intent. This is most prevalent on the last song. The vocals mainly consist of a low, vile croak. They sound very familiar to me, but I can't quite place my finger on it. He also performs this bone-chilling scream that sounds quite similar to Silencer. When I first heard those horrifying screams, I almost shat my pants.
Not only is this guy a great vocalist, he's also a formidable guitarist. They mainly play these dark, discordant riffs that sound similar to what Leviathan plays. Their structure and sound feel so unorthodox, I can't help but love them. They also play plenty of fast riffs that are sure to satisfy fans of traditional black metal. I also love this one amazing solo he did on “The Incandescent Aberrance”. I wished he performed more awesome solos like that.
My only problem with this album is that there's too much filler. The first two minutes of the first album consists of rumbling sounds. I can understand building tension, but if it goes on for too long, then the listener will get bored and stop the album. Other than that, this was a fantastic black metal album full of pounding drums, great bass, horrifying vocals, and wicked guitar. On top of all that, I love the cover art.
