Baxaxaxa – Hellfire

The oddly-named Baxaxaxa was a black metal band from Germany that formed in 1992. They released one demo called Hellfire that same year, then released a split album with Ungod a decade later. They broke up soon after that. I've heard a lot of people talk about how great this demo is, but after listening to it, I don't really see anything great about it.

The drums mainly stick to playing simple mid-paced rhythms that feature a great deal of tinkering with small cymbals. They offer little in the way of variety, aside from playing a bit of double bass and a few mediocre blast beats. Their performance is dreary, and not in a good way.

The vocals consist of an awkward croak that doesn't appear to have any force or emotion behind it. The guys performance isn't really evil or demonic so much as it is nerdy and irritating.

The guitars never do much beyond simple chords. Not only are these chords uninteresting, they're also unoriginal. Every single riff on this album has been played before by other black metal bands, and much better. These riffs were unoriginal even by the standards of 1992.

I can do bad, alright. I can have fun with tearing apart bad. You saw how I tore into Von and Butcher Shoppe and Enmity and the like. But I can't do boring. I just can't do boring. Baxaxaxa may have a silly name, but they're dreadfully boring. There's nothing exciting or interesting about them. Their music is just a pathetic, lifeless mess.
