The French-speaking peoples produce some really fucked-up black metal. I don't know why. I guess it must be because they're sick and tired of how people constantly make fun of their language, mainly how French words are never pronounced the way they're spelled. One of the latest fucked-up bands to emerge from the French-speaking world is Déliquescence, which was formed by two of the members of Forteresse. They released their first demo, Antinomisme, last year, and it's a crazy journey.
The first song begins with some ambient sounds that actually sound creepy instead of cheesy. They then transition to some acoustic guitars that are accompanied by this distant, reverb-drenched howl that sounds quite similar to Xasthur. Then we get to the music proper, and it's a real treat. Just like the howl at the beginning, the music reminds me of Xasthur, but played at a faster pace. The production is lo-fi, but still listenable. It sounds like they recorded this in a haunted sewer.
The drums play lots of simple and violent blast beats as well as some more straightforward mid-paced rhythms. It's nothing fancy, but it still gets the job done. The vocals consist of a frantic howl that is drenched in reverb. I love this vocal style, and whoever does the vocals puts on a great performance. Best of all are the guitars. The tremolo riffs exude a dark, echoing atmosphere. I swear, it sounds almost like something you'd hear on Telepathic With The Deceased. I love it.
This was a great demo filled with cold riffs and a dark atmosphere. I hope these guys release a full-length soon.
