This is... wow. Holy shit. This is awesome. Okay, so Imperial Triumphant is a black metal band from New York. They've been active for a while, but this is the first time I've heard of them. I had no idea what I was missing.
The first song begins with some "ominous" sounds followed by growled incantations. They deliberately fool you into thinking that their music is shit before kicking you in the balls for daring to think that. The guitars consist of a great deal of noodling as well as some crazed, discordant riffs. Two of the members also play in a technical death metal band called Pyrrhon, so the craziness of the guitars is unsurprising. I know a lot of people have already compared these guys to Deathspell Omega, but I'll do the same. These guys sound like Deathspell Omega. They're fucking possessed. How else are they able to come up with music that sounds this diabolical?
The drums sound like a herd of rampaging elephants that are coming to stomp your body into a fine red paste. They play lots of complex rhythms and fills that completely overwhelm you. As for the vocals, they consist of a sinister rasped growl that perfectly compliments the torrent of madness that is the rest of the music.
The second song is a bit more orthodox, but it's still avant garde in structure, this time featuring monstrous blast beats and guitars that can best be described as sounding like a swarm of locusts. There's also this moment at the halfway point where the music gets all slow, the bass becomes more prominent, and the drums beats sound a lot more doom-like. This lasts for a few minutes before descending right back into chaos.
I'm kicking myself for not finding out about these guys sooner. I've spent so much time reviewing shitty death metal demos from two decades ago that I haven't even tried looking for awesome new stuff. These guys are awesome, pure and simple. This offering may be short, but it's colossal. I'll be sure to keep my eye out for the day when they release something new.
