Mary Shelley was an English author who is best known for writing Frankenstein. She was married to the romantic poet Percy Shelley and...
Oh wait, wrong Mary Shelley. The Mary Shelley we're talking about was an atmospheric black metal band from Portland, Oregon, which means they're technically from Cascadia. This means they have a knack for injecting natural beauty into their music.
Since they're from Cascadia, two elements are present in their music: post-punk influences and a vibrant atmosphere. Many disparate emotions flow through the music. Sometimes it sounds extremely dark, and other times it sounds rather triumphant. The distortion creates a cloud that exudes a feeling of mystery.
The guitars are also just as varied. Sometimes they'll be launching forth a rapid tremolo assault. Other times they'll slow things way down and go into drone territory. There are even times when they'll play some wicked chugging. The rasps are pretty average, but the distortion enhances the emotions they express.
Their first demo may lack polish, but it's still a great listen.
