Discography Slog: Aggression (Rus)

Aggression was one of Russia's first metal bands, forming in Voronezh in 1992. Their first demo was released in the same year and has the odd title of Hell 'em All.

The production is a bit better than most other Russian death metal bands during that time. Although the instruments are rather quiet, I can still hear them quite clearly, especially the guitars. The guitars are well-performed and some of the riffs remind me of Death and Obituary. The solos are even more spectacular and remind me of Rick Rozz. The drums are equally excellent, especially with its cymbal work and double bass.

I do have three problems with this demo. First of all, the intros to each song are too long. Just hurry up and get to the music. Second, the songs themselves are too long. Sure, the music is great, but it eventually ends up getting repetitive if you play it for too long. Third, the vocals are rather weak. They sound like a low rasp and it doesn't really fit with the rest of the music.

Three years after the release of Hell 'em All, Aggression released another oddly-named demo called Sexual Attraction To Corporal Lips. After that, the band changed its name to MysticalGate and started playing doom metal.

The production is both better and worse than it was on the previous demo. The instruments sound much more fuller and more powerful, but at the same time, they sound more muffled. The drums have become much more progressive in nature, as they are playing much more complex rhythms. The guitars have become equally as progressive and have a much deeper sound. The vocals now consist of a deep growl and are a huge improvement over the previous demo.

Unfortunately, it still has the problem from the previous demo in that the songs are too long. The length of this demo is 41:30. If the length was half that, I would be able to enjoy this demo much more.
