I've heard a lot of bad things about this album. Some have even called it the worst death metal album ever made. Surely, it can't be that bad. I'll try to give these guys a fair trial.
The biggest problem lies in the production. It's all over the place. Some songs have impeccable production while others have awful production. Take the first song for example. All of the instruments are mixed nicely and you can hear them loud and clear. On the very next song, however, the drums and bass are too high in the mix and the guitars get drowned out, except when they're performing a solo. On the song after that, everything's too loud. The worst production is on the appropriately named “Submerged in Silence”. Everything is quiet and muffled and sounds like it was recorded underwater. If they had a more competent sound engineer, then they would have fixed these production inconsistencies real easily.
As for the music itself, it's well-played, but painfully original. The bands they rip off the most are Deicide and Obituary, especially in the guitar and vocal departments. At least the guitars sound nice and heavy and play some sick riffs and wicked solos (especially the one on “Carcassed”), but I can't shake the notion that I've heard these riffs somewhere else. The drums are exceptionally well-done, especially that solo at the beginning of “Blademade”. He plays so many exquisite fills, and if he weren't stuck in Malicious Onslaught, he would have gone on to do much greater things.
In conclusion, Malicious Onslaught isn't really bad, they're just unoriginal. They're simply another faceless body floating in the ocean of mediocre death metal bands.
