Sulphurous – Demo 2012

Sulphurous is one of those bands that appears seemingly out of nowhere and takes you by the balls with their evil nature, like a sewer monster or Dick Cheney. This is just their first demo and I've already been blown away by them.

The production is as dark and murky as the forbidden cave from which Sulphurous emerged. I normally like cleaner production for death metal, but the type of production Sulphurous uses perfectly pairs up with the music. The music itself reminds me a bit of Muknal, but instead of the mystic, otherworldly feeling they exude, Sulphurous gives off a diabolical, subterranean aura.

The bass is extremely thick, which enhances the miasmic atmosphere even more. The drums are sort of buried, but they are played superbly, constantly pounding your chest with vigorous blasts and elaborate fills. The guitars are your typical old school worship, but what really blew me away were the solos. They howl and twist and turn their way through the miasma and give the music a sense of dread it would have otherwise lacked.

Sulphurous beckons you. Listen. Embrace. Come to the depths.
