Necromancer – Tombstone Epitaph

Necromancer was one of Russia's first death metal bands. They formed in 1992, released only one demo named Tombstone Epitaph, then split up. Also, most of these guys were involved in Noise of Silence. I'm afraid that's all I know about them.

The production is better than was found on most other early 90s Russian death metal demos. I can hear the instruments quite nicely and none of it is hidden behind an impenetrable fog of fuzz. Also, the bass is high in the mix and is nicely played, which was a rarity back then. Unfortunately, they music Necromancer plays is painfully average.

The drums only ever play simple beats and blasts. Just bass-snare bass-snare over and over again. The drums are so mechanical and lifeless, I have a feeling they were programmed. The guitars only play your stock death metal riffs and chugs. No variety or originality in sight. The vocals are a standard low, throaty growl. Again, nothing exciting or original. Just a parade of average. There is this one moment on “Belching Beast” where he uses a pitch shifter to make his growls sound more monstrous and demonic, but they just end up becoming cheesy.

Necromancer put on an admirable performance, but their average nature just couldn't hold my attention.
