Nontinuum – Dwelling In Oceans

Due to Nontinuum's reclusive nature, I don't really know anything about them. All I know is that they are another in a long line of depressive black metal bands, this time from Australia, which just so happens to be a major hub for the genre. They released their first demo, Dwelling In Oceans, in October of 2010.

The element people have most often complained about is the production. I admit, I can barely hear the drums, but it's hardly the worst production in the world. I can think of bands that have far worse production (*cough* Jewicide *cough*). As for the music, it's typical depressive black metal, but it's not all that bad. The drums are very minimalistic, playing simple and slow beats, never venturing beyond the bass, snare, and hi-hat. On the song “In Oceans”, they do get a bit more complex, but not by much.

The guitars are the same way. The play simple riffs and utilize repetition and a pleasing tone to create a bleak and melancholic atmosphere. They also put in a few clean guitar sections to keep things from getting boring. My favorite one's on the song “In Oceans”. The vocals consist of agonized wails, but nothing high-pitched. Due to the production, they are very muffled, and this can aggravate some people. There's also this one section where the guy utilizes clean vocals. A lot of people hated this part, but I didn't think they were that bad.

Overall, Dweling In Oceans is a love it or hate it affair. You'll either love it for the bleak atmosphere it creates or you'll hate it for being boring and repetitive.
