Tezcatlipoca is a one-man black metal band from somewhere in the southwestern United States and was formed by a guy named Tuularicon, who also happens to be the vocalist for Hellkvlt Mexica. Knowing that, I'm eager to hear what he has to offer.
Unlike Hellkvlt Mexica, Tezcatlipoca plays more traditional black metal, but they still play it well. The production is deliciously lo-fi. The guitars have a type of distortion on them that creates a rather hypnotic atmosphere. The songwriting is the same way. They use repetition to create a hypnotic effect, as can be seen by the song “Ever So Still”. There are some production inconsistencies – the fourth song is quieter than the rest and the last song is louder than the rest – but thanks to the quality of the music, I'm able to overlook this flaw.
As I said before, the guitars play more traditional black metal riffs, but they have a touch of melody to them that adds to their hypnotic effect. The drums are the same way. They mainly play mid-paced beats, but they use those beats to add to the hypnotic atmosphere. Tuularicon was a great vocalist in Hellkvlt Mexica and he's a great vocalist here. He utilizes the more typical Darkthrone-inspired rasp, but they're delivered with amazing anger and ferocity.
This demo may have a few flaws, but it's still amazing. Thanks to bands like Tezcatlipoca, it looks like the Atlatl Music Group is shaping up to be one amazing label.
