Voltur is a mysterious and esoteric black metal band living in an undisclosed location in the United States. Their first demo, Obscuritas Incantamentum, was released in 2012 by Fallow Field, who also released House of Apparition's first demo and Black Beasts' first EP. Judging by the label's past releases, I expect Voltur to play blackened noise as well.
Indeed, I was right, but the blackened noise Voltur plays is stranger than most. They play blackened noise that is wrapped in cloudy distortion, just like House of Apparition. However, the riffs are much more unorthodox. The drums mainly play mid-paced rhythms with lots of cymbal crashes and a few fills that help to create a disorienting atmosphere. The guitars are a bit harder to describe. They mainly play mid-paced riffs that sound rather high-pitched. They have a sorrowful yet alien feel to them. The vocals consist of spectral howls similar to Xasthur and further reinforce the disheartening feel of the music.
Listening to Voltur is a strange experience. Then again, I'm a sucker for weird shit, so I love these guys. If you're looking for obscure and esoteric black metal that is unorthodox in its approach, then Voltur might be the thing for you.
