Ziel Bevrijd – Ziel Bevrijd

I keep hearing people go on and on about how great this demo is. After listening to it, I can honestly say I don't know what the big deal is.

My biggest problem is with the production inconsistencies. On one song, the instruments sound all clear, but on the next song, it's all muffled, which leads me to believe that they recorded these songs during different sessions. You can either have a hi-fi production or a lo-fi production, but you can't have both.

In terms of musicianship, I fully acknowledge that these guys put on a great performance, but it just doesn't wow me. Parts of it remind me of Ephemer and other parts of it have this mid-paced viking feel going on. The drums play a lot of great fills, the guitars have lots of melody to them, the vocals sound profoundly agonized, and they even throw in some clean vocals, but it just doesn't click with me. I tried really hard to like this album, because like I said before, the performance is fantastic, but it just doesn't hold my attention. I guess, for me, the problem lies in the inconsistent production. If the production quality was more stable, then I'd be able to enjoy this a lot more.
