Vocivus – Vocivus

Vocivus is a mysterious black metal band from America that features Daniel Bouse, the man behind Xothist. This should be good.

Vocivus is just as dark and unsettling as Xothist. The cassette consists of two distinct sides: side A is all black metal, side B is all dark ambient. The black metal is dark, murky, and unwelcoming. The drums are slow and plodding, with constant cymbal clashes creating a raucous, disorienting environment. The vocals lurk deep in the distortion cloud, emerging out of the murk like a creature from the swamp. The guitars are of a Xasthurian nature, as they're wrapped in a heavy fog of fuzzy distortion, creating a cold, bleak atmosphere.

As I said before, side B consists entirely of dark ambient, and it's even more unwelcoming than the black metal side. I'm not much of a dark ambient fan, but I really like what they've composed here. I don't really know how to describe dark ambient, so I'll just describe what the sounds conjure up in my head. To me, it sounds like an ethereal beast lurking within a cave that is illuminated only by an unknown fungus. This beast constantly taps on the walls. They echo across the cave walls. There is a lake deep within this cave, and residing in it are strange fish that have never seen the sun. As such, they are blind, but they perceive the world in far more profound ways than any man.

I love Xothist and I love Vocivus. Both play amazing combinations of black metal and dark ambient that are unsettling and otherworldly.
