Sodb. What does Sodb mean? I don't know, but their Last.fm page says their name is pronounced “Sod-uv”. This pronunciation makes no sense. There is no V in Sodb. I hate it when words aren't spelled the way they're pronounced. French is an entire language based on this annoying concept. Furthermore, what is a “Chuid Fein”? That sounds like some sort of Final Fantasy creature. I imagine it would look like a giant walking red onion with a big mouth that likes to bite people's butts. Anyway, I need to stop going off on a tangent and actually review this. I'm starting to sound like Spoony here.
I've heard a lot of good things about this release, but to be honest, it doesn't really hold my attention. Don't get me wrong, they're great musicians. The bass is really high in the mix and is really well-played. Hearing the bass so well is quite a rarity in black metal. They play a mixture of black metal and post metal that utilizes impish rasps, drums that implement a lot of cymbal work, and rather melodic guitars. They put on a great performance, but it just doesn't seem to hold my attention. Have you ever had those cases where your friends tell you all about how great a certain movie is and when you go see it, it doesn't interest you at all, even though you can appreciate how well-made it is? I'm experiencing the same feeling with this album. These guys are great musicians and have a real knack for songwriting, but they just don't click with me at all.
