Satan Pope – Prologue

I love the name. I harkens back to the rise of death metal back in the early 90s. However, Satan Pope is not a death metal band, they are a black metal band. Blackened sludge, to be more precise.

As with all sludge, the bass is ridiculously high in the mix and gives the impression that the recording is about to collapse in on itself. It's dark and dirty, just like what sludge is meant to be. Due to the colossal, overwhelming nature of the bass, I can't really hear the guitars, but they mainly consist of simple beats with a prominent hi-hat. The guitars are also hard to hear, but they have a touch of melody to them. Some of the riffs border on depressive black metal. There are no vocals, but if you ask me, something like this works best without vocals.

Overall, this was a great display of dirty, sludgy black metal that sounds broad and powerful and has a tiny touch of melody.
