Cancerous Factor formed back in 1987 as Destroyed Youth but changed their name in 1991. Two years later they released their only demo, Malignant. It's a good thing they didn't release anything else, because this demo was a chore to get through.
The first big problem is that it drags on too long. Three songs for a total of sixteen minutes. The longest song on here is almost seven minutes long. I don't mind if you make long songs as long as you make them interesting. Some of my favorite metal songs are above the ten minute mark. Unfortunately for Cancerous Factor, they're unable to make interesting music. What they've made here is a drawn-out, meandering maze of boredom.
There's no rhyme or reason to the drums. He just seems to strike his kit at random. There are those moments where he implements blast beats and double bass, but they seem underdeveloped and aimless. The guitars also express this directionless quality. Simple riffing randomly gives way to awkward shredding that sound like they were stolen from Cannibal Corpse's cutting room floor. There is this one time on “Desperate Struggle” where they perform a solo that tries to sound like Rick Rozz but instead sounds like he was angrily wailing on strings. The result is one of the most annoying solos I've heard in all of death metal. Worst of all are the vocals. I take it the guy was unable to perform real death metal vocals, so he had them pitch-shifted. As with many other death metal bands that try to do this, these vocals are incredibly out of place. Pitch-shifting belongs in goregrind. If you pitch-shift your vocals in death metal, people will think you're a talentless hack.
Cancerous Factor is true to their name. Their music is so insufferable and boring it could give you cancer. Stay the fuck away from this demo. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go to the doctor and have him examine this lump on my left nut.
