As with most other really obscure death metal bands, I can't find much information about these guys. All I know is that they were a death metal band from Florida that formed back in 1991, released one demo called Flesh Consumed a year later, and broke up shortly thereafter. Two of their members then went on to form Bone Saw.
Due to the low quality production, it's kind of hard to hear what's going on, which means I had to crank up the volume in order to make out everything. Luckily, the great musicianship manage to make up for this. Tony Hicks, who later went on to play drums for Bone Saw, pounds away at his kit with relentless fervor, churning out high-speed blast beats and killer fills. As with Bone Saw, the bass is pretty high in the mix and makes the music sound really meaty, just as old school death metal should.
And of course, the guitars are the best part of this presentation. They shred with malicious intent and the tone is just plain diabolical. I especially like that slam on “Laid to Rest”. I know this sounds like a stretch, but this just may be the world's first example of slam, predating Afterbirth's Psychopathic Embryotomy demo by a whole year. In fact, this entire demo is packed full of proto-brutal death metal riffs, especially the slow chugging and pinch harmonics on “Lust the Cold”.
The only part that kept me from truly appreciating this demo was the vocalist. He performs these really deep gurgled vocals. I think he pitch-shifted his growls so as to make them sound more like Carcass. To be honest, it doesn't fit with the rest of the music. If you ask me, they should have gone with more traditional death metal vocals. Then again, considering that the guitars sound like early brutal death metal riffs, I'm under the impression he was trying to make his vocals sound as brutal as the guitars. His attempt didn't work out all that well but I appreciate the effort.
Aside from the vocals, this was a great demo featuring amazing drumming and guitars that sound like the precursors to brutal death metal. If the band had stayed together a bit longer, they would have made something truly amazing. I'm guessing they didn't get that much traction because they were too far ahead of their time.
