I recently discovered a site called the Flint Underground Music Archive, which is full of obscure music from the Flint, Michigan area. Most of what they had consisted of punk which didn't interest me in the slightest, but then I stumbled upon a band called Arrangements In Grey. I was enticed by their rather minimal cassette artwork, and I was pleased by what I heard.
These guys play synthpop, which is a form of post-punk where the synthesizer is the dominant instrument. The synths on this demo create a gloomy atmosphere that perfectly embodies the gloom present throughout the decaying city of Flint. One particular element I like is the bass. Unlike the extreme metal I listen to, the bass in this synthpop group is pretty prominent and play some sweet licks. The guitars also reflect the gloomy feel of the synth, and for some strange reason some of their riffs remind me of Gundam. As for the vocals, some people might describe them as "emotionless", but if you ask me, they represent the apathy and listlessness that plagues the youth of Flint.
I really like this, and saying that surprises me because I almost never listen to stuff like synthpop. I love the gloomy atmosphere, I love the guitars, and I especially love the lo-fi quality of the production.
