Morticious – Genetic Blurr

There are two bands name Morticious. One was a thrash metal band from San Francisco. The other is a death metal band from Virginia. This review deals with the band from Virginia. They formed back in 1988 and released only two demos before splitting up. I only managed to find their last demo, Genetic Blurr.

Since this is a death metal demo from the beginning of the 90s, the song structures are much more simple and thrash-inspired than what we're used to. The drums play lots of double bass and simple blast beats as well as a couple fills. The vocalist rapidly alternates between Autopsy-like growls and manic screams. The guitars exhibit a strong thrash metal influence, especially in the rhythm section. One aspect about this demo I really appreciate is the prominent bass. You rarely see that on death metal demos. I especially like how well-produced this is. There are a few fade outs on occasion, but I can still hear everything quite fine. Nothing sounds like it's trying to escape from Nurgle's foul, fetid, corpulent asshole.

But what do I feel about the music as a whole? Well, these guys put on a great performance, but it doesn't really entice me. Personally, I think their music is too simple and too rooted in thrash. I also don't like how short this demo is. Five songs go by in only eleven and a half minutes. They don't give me enough time to really experience the music. Overall, they're great musicians, but their work wasn't really to my liking.
