Dawn of Dementia - Residuum

Look at that dopey grin on that volcano's face. Anyway, Dawn of Dementia is a technical death metal band from Indiana and Residuum is their debut EP. I love the cover art and I love the logo, so I have pretty high hopes for these guys.

The instrumentation on this EP is superb. Contrary to most other technical death metal bands, these guys are more mid-paced, with some faster parts scattered throughout. The slower tempos allows for the details in their musical structures to shine through. The double bass is played almost constantly, almost feeling like an ocean of lava boiling beneath your feet. The drums play blast beats on occasion, but they mainly stick to playing these mid-paced rhythms that show a great deal of complexity, especially when they play fills.

One thing I really appreciate about this album is the prominent bass. Not only can it be heard really well, but they're also astoundingly complex, playing these mind-boggling riffs that would make Steve DiGiorgio proud. Of course, the best part about this album is the guitar work. The tone has this melodic flair to it which gives the music a rather infectious nature. Sometimes, these melodic riffs can sound quite beautiful, such as on “Somatic Fallacy”. The riffs are sublime in their complexity, weaving and swirling their way through the air in a glorious firestorm. Some of these riffs remind me of Necrophagist, and I really enjoy that. They use lots of weedly-weedly fretwork, but not so much that it becomes aggravating.

The only part I didn't like were the vocals. They consist of this hoarse growl, and if you ask me, they sound rather weak when compared to the rest of the music. They should have gone with a performance more in line with Necrophagist. Other than that, I really like this album. I like the prominent bass, I love the complex guitar work, and I love the melodic tone that can make the music sounds quite beautiful at times, especially when they play slow.
