Abhorration are a brutal death metal band from California that formed back in 2011 and released their self-titled debut this year. What really drew me to these guys was the album cover by Dan Seagrave. It's odd how you don't see his work so often nowadays because he has such a recognizable and iconic style. It's pretty much embodies death metal. However, the album cover is simply the marketing. What really matters is the music.
When I first listened to these guys, the first band that popped into my mind was Cenotaph. It has plenty of groovy riffs and pinch harmonics. However, they also sound similar to the other brutal death metal bands in California in that they mostly play at a very fast pace. Euphoric Defilement comes to mind. These guys definitely know how to play their instruments. The drums offer up a steady stream of ferocious blast beats, although I wish the snare wasn't so high in the mix and I wish the double bass didn't sound like a typewriter.
The vocals remind me of Deeds of Flesh in that they utilize both deep growls and gravelly screams. The guitars are both fast and groovy, offering up both relentless tremolo riffs, head banging rhythm sections, and plenty of pinch harmonics. They also throw in a few slams for good measure. You can't go wrong with some good slams. However, I can't shake the feeling that the music gets a bit repetitive after awhile. A bit more variety in the sound would have helped.
Overall, their music is pretty good, but I wish they would fixed the sound of the snare and double bass, and I wish the songwriting had a bit more variety. I still like the album cover, though. I also liked how prominent the bass was, but the rest of the music could still use some work.
