Nations of Death – No One Is Divine

Nations of Death was a proto brutal death metal band from Denmark that formed back in 1991. They released only two demos, No One Is Divine and Wrecked, before splitting up. Some of the members later went on to join bands like Iniquity. I'm afraid that's all I know about them.

One thing's for sure: the instrumentation is awesome. It sounds like a mix of early Morbid Angel, Deicide, and Cannibal Corpse, with some thrash metal elements thrown in for good measure. The drums stick to a moderate pace, with blast beats and fills showing up on occasion. I like how clear the snare sounds. This was back when bands actually cared about dynamic range instead of having their music be as loud as possible. The growls sound like a mix of early David Vincent and Glen Benton. They exude power and echo across the barren landscape. The demo is packed full of simple and hard-hitting riffs. Some of them reminded me of Obituary. They also made sure to throw in plenty of howling solos. These, too, remind me of Obituary.

There's just one problem that keeps me from liking this demo: it's too long. Sure, the music is great and all, but after a while, it just becomes repetitive. This demo is half an hour long, and I started to become bored about halfway through. Personally, I think this demo would have been a lot better if it was shorter. Remember: brevity is wit.
