Asilent – Recalibrated Chaos

Singapore is a tiny city state at the tip of the Malaysian peninsula that has the second highest economic freedom index in the world. It also has a burgeoning metal scene, and the latest contender to come out of this scene is Asilent. They formed back in 2004, but they didn't release anything until last year. Let's see what they have to offer.

The first thing I noticed was that the riffs had a bit of a melodic flair to them that sounds quite similar to what you might find in Sweden. At first, you might think this doesn't fit, but the music still remains outstandingly brutal, so it still makes sense. Not only that, but the melodic flair helps makes things more interesting. It sure is a lot more interesting than an endless parade of simple slam riffs.

The vocals consist of a deep, hoarse growl that sounds similar to a lot of brutal death metal bands in Malaysia and Indonesia. Given how close Singapore is to both of those countries, I'm not surprised. The drums are utterly relentless, bombarding your ears with a violent torrent of blast beats and double bass. Even the bass makes an appearance on occasion, giving us some sweet licks.

Since this album is only twenty minutes long, there isn't much left to talk about. Except for the audio clips, that is. I felt they threw those in there in order to pad it out. I can understand trying to reach a certain length in order to meet a quota, but personally, I found the audio clips quite annoying. Other than that, this was a pretty unique take on brutal death metal. Who knew melody and Swedish-style groove would work so well with utter brutality?
