Quick question: what would a shitty death metal band sound like if they recorded underwater? Well, if I had to guess, it would probably sound like Sadistis. Brace yourselves, ladies and gentlemen, because this one's a real doozy.
Sadistis is an Indonesian brutal death metal band that formed way back in 1993, and their first demo, The Creation Of God, was recorded four years later. To be fair, the Indonesians didn't really have the hang of brutal death metal just yet, but that's still no excuse to make music this shitty. First of all, the production is atrocious. Everything is way too quiet and hard to make out. There are also certain parts where the music quality degrades into a muffled mess. I'm not sure if that was a tape-ripping error or if the production was just that bad. Either way, I hate it. Even when the production is tolerable, it still sounds like shit. The guitars are too far off in the background and the snare sounds like the guy's pounding on cardboard.
As for the music itself, it's just shitty death metal that relentlessly rips off better bands, most notably Deicide. The guitars just play the most boring stock riffs imaginable. They do nothing to hold my attention. The awful production certainly doesn't help matters. There are a few moments where they try to play a solo, but it just sounds like he's angrily wailing on his fretboard. There's no thought put into it at all.
The vocals are even worse. They consist of this muffled, pitch-shifted growl that is utterly indecipherable. Let me point out once again that pitch-shifting your growls makes sense in goregrind, but when you try to do that in death metal, it just makes you look lazy. The only musician on this demo who seems to give a shit is the drummer. He's able to churn out sweet blasts and fills like they were nothing. It's just too bad that he's hindered by the production and his fellow band mates.
This demo ranks right up there with Tympanic Membrane as one of the most confusing piles of shit I've ever listened to. The production is atrocious and the music is just as bad, with the only saving grace being the drums. While doing research on these guys, I learned that they released three full-lengths after this demo. After listening to this demo, I don't want to listen to those full-lengths.
