I was having a rather hard time finding good obscure bands on ReverbNation. Everything I found was either popular bands that had a number of releases under their belt or shitty one-man bands who had no idea how to play their instruments. I was about to give up until I decided to search for black metal in New Zealand. I stumbled onto a little-known band called Atramentous, and I was quite pleased with what I heard.
The music is furious, blasphemous, and uncompromising. What I find most amazing is that even thought this is a one-man band, it sounds like a full band. Now that's a sign of great production. Not only is Tim a superb producer, he's also a superb musician. The drums maybe programmed, but they sound quite real and can pull off not only violent blast beats, but some more complex kit work as well. The rasps are nasty and vicious and exude pain and malice in equal measure. On top of all that, the guitars play some pretty sweet riffs, as well as some lead riffs that take you to dark places that were once only imagined.
Atramentous is criminally underrated, to say the least. If you're a fan of violent black metal, then you should listen to this. If you're a fan of extreme metal from New Zealand, then you should listen to this. Who knew the bright green country where they filmed The Lord Of The Rings could produce black metal this blasphemous?
