Bölzer – Aura

Bölzer is a Swiss blackened death metal band that was formed in 2008, and Aura is their latest release. From what I've heard from people, this EP is really good, so let's listen.

Sure enough, this EP is pretty sweet. The production is thick and dark, which is quite similar to what is being put out by most other underground death metal bands recently. As a matter of fact, one of the members of Bölzer is also a member of Witchrist, so it's obvious that the production would be thick and dark.

As for the music itself, they play rather fast, but not hyperspeed fast. They also accentuate these fast parts with plenty of mid-paced and slow parts. The drums play plenty of blast beats that feature some intricate cymbal work, as well as your standard moderate to slow rhythms. The vocals consist of a low growl that sounds similar to Incantation. Pretty enjoyable stuff. What really caught me by surprise were the shouts they frequently used. I was quite shocked when I first heard them, and their inclusion is quite unorthodox to say the least.

The guitars are awesome, though. Their tone is rather hard to explain. It's still dark and menacing like death metal, but it also has this sludgy feel to it during the fast parts. The tremolo riffs sound absolutely foreboding, but the mid-paced riffs had this special groove to them. The offering is extremely eclectic, but their performance is still grand.

Overall, this EP is rather bizarre, and some might see this album as extremely confused and lacking a concrete identity, but it's still enjoyable. These guys are great musicians and they have a unique artistic vision.
